A treaty is a formally written document / contract containing rules and law. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on the 6Th February 1840. The British settlers and 40 Maori chiefs signed the treaty of Waitangi. By the end of 6Th of Feb 1840, 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi but 39 didn't sign it. A man named Henry William Treaty and his son Edward translated the treaty into the Maori language. Some of the Maori thought it was good. The messages were in different languages. In 1969 a tribunal was like a court and the Maoris could make claim at the court. There were lawyers and iwi’s. At the end they got apologies and compensation from the white men for taking land.
